Elementary Standards

What learners should know (content) and be able to do (skills), serve as the framework for curriculum development. Standards in NAD Seventh-day Adventist schools reflect the Adventist worldview across the K-12 curricula as well as the integration of national and provincial/state standards.

The Flatbush Seventh-day Adventist School is designed to provide a Christ – centered quality education for its children and youth as it prepares them for life here and for the “higher joy a wider service in the world to come.” Education pg 13.

 

Curriculum

The school follows the curriculum guide outlined by the Atlantic Union and the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists in conjunction with the Education Department of the State of New York.

As a minimum, it offers the following course of study:

Art Activities Religious Education English Music Appreciation Reading Science-Health Physical Education

Social Studies Spelling Writing Spanish Practical Arts/Computer Mathematics

 

Grades and Grading

A progress report will be sent to the parents of each student at the end of each nine (9) week grading period. It will indicate the child’s progress in the different disciplines and the development of attitudes, work habits, and social habits.

Interim reports will be sent to all parent/guardians each mid-term. Parents/guardians should seek a Parent/Teacher Conference when such a report is not satisfactory. Mandatory Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled at the end of the first and third marked periods.

The following system of grading will be followed:

 

Grade K – 2 E – Excellent S – Satisfactory N – Needs Improvement U – Unsatisfactory

Grade 3 – 5 A – Superior (90-100) B – Above Average (80-89) C – Average (70-79) D – Below Average (60-96) F – Failure (0-59) I – Incomplete FA- Failure due to absence

 

Graduation Requirements

Students who successfully complete all requirements for graduation will become members of the graduation class and will receive a diploma at the time of graduation. Eighth grade students working below grade level and who cannot repeat the grade due to age will receive a certificate of completion.

Students will be required to earn a minimum accumulative average final grade of “C” (70-79) in the following subjects to be eligible for graduation:

 

Art Computer Music Religious Education Reading English

Science Mathematics Social Science Spanish Physical Education

 

In addition to the academic requirements, student must exhibit good moral character, and must have satisfactory financial clearance from the school.

Honor Roll

In order to encourage all students to do their best academically, and to reward them for their achievement, all students who have received a minimum grade average of 3.50 or above will be listed on the Principals Honor Roll.

Honor Students

The practice of designating students as Valedictorian and Salutatorian in the elementary school is discontinued. The following categories are recommended by the Atlantic Union Conference at graduation:

Highest Honor – 3.90 -4.00
High Honor – 3.75 – 3.89
Honor – 3.50 – 3.74

Incomplete

When an “I” is redeemed, the grade received for it may not exceed a “B” unless the student can present evidence to show that the incomplete resulted from circumstances beyond his/her control. An incomplete not removed within the following nine-week period will automatically become a failure or “F” grade.

Failures

Parents should be notified when a child is failing academically, and in discipline.

Testing

Each school in the Northeastern Conference administers the Iowa Test of Basic Skills as part of the testing program each spring of the year. The results of this standardized achievement tests are discussed with each parent during the Parent/Teacher Conference. A computerized copy is placed in the student’s permanent file and one is issued to the parents.

Promotion Requirements

Students must maintain a “C” average or above (Grades 3-5), or its equivalent for K-2 to be promoted to the next grade level.

Exception to this rule will only be made when in counsel with the parent/guardian, teacher, and principal it is believed a grade would be of absolutely no benefit to this child.

Occasionally, the principal and teacher may strongly recommend summer school for a student who receives a “D” in more than one subject for the year.

Exceptional Ability

As a rule students with exceptional ability are not allowed to skip grades or take two grades in one year. Such students will receive enrichment by wider and more challenging study and experience rather than by skipping grades. Super exceptional students will be referred to the superintendent for testing and upgrading.

The religious program of the school will serve to set the tone for the entire school day. Religious education classes and activities will emphasize character building.

The religious program will include the following activities:

1. 1. Devotional Periods: Each school day will begin and end in devotional.
   2. Bible Doctrines: This class will be conducted to provide opportunity for students desiring additional information on the doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Attendance in this class is optional.
   3. Religious Education Class: This is a required academic class for all students.
   4. Week of Prayer: A week of Spiritual Emphasis will be conducted twice during each school year. One in the fall and the other in the spring.
