Home and School

The Flatbush Seventh-day Adventist School seeks to promote an active Home and School Association. Regular meetings are held on the first Monday of the month. These meetings are designed to provide opportunity for parents, teachers, School Committee members, patrons, church members, and all other interested persons to share, develop and widen their own ideas of child growth and development academically, socially, and culturally.

HOME AND SCHOOL

Contacting Students and Teachers

Students and teachers will not be called from classes to answer the telephone except in cases of emergency. Therefore, the office will deliver such messages only in cases of emergency. Otherwise, messages will be accepted and delivered within the school day.

Emergency Closing

School will be closed because of inclement weather when the Brooklyn or New York City Public Schools are closed. Listen for school news on WINS 1010 radio.

Field Trips

Participation in class field trips and school trips requires written permission from parents/guardians.

Fire Drills

Fire drills are held regularly during the school year. Students are expected to obey pertinent rules of safety.

First Aid

First aid will be applied only when necessary. Major accidents will be sent to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Linden and Rockaway Parkway while the student’s parent/guardian is being notified. The primary care physician will be contacted.

Illness

To avoid the spread of contagious disease, parents are expected to keep at home children with bad colds, rashes, who are on medication, or those who are suspected of illness. In the case of contagious disease students are required to bring to the Principal’s office a doctor’s statement of re-admission to class.

Insurance

The school carries liability and accident insurance which covers all school sponsored activities. At registration all students are insured for accidents occurring during school hours.

Transportation

The school does not operate a bus system, but secures bus passes from the Office of Pupil Transportation for all eligible students in accordance with the eligibility guidelines.

Lunches

Students are encouraged to bring wholesome healthful vegetarian lunches to school including some fresh fruit, fruit juice, milk and whole grain bread.

Hot vegetarian lunches are prepared and served at the school at a minimum cost to students.

The use of pork, lobster, crab, or shrimp, Spam, shellfish, or conch in any form is forbidden. Coke, Pepsi or any alcoholic drink is also forbidden.

Parent Concerns/Complaints

Parents with concerns should first discuss them with the teacher (s) involved. If not satisfied, then see the principal. If further discussion is needed, a written request to the principal to meet with the school Board is the next resource.

Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences

These conferences are scheduled at the end of each marking period or when the parent or teacher senses a need. Parents and students are provided an opportunity to discuss the instructional program with teachers and plan for home and school cooperation to maintain student progress.

Report Cards

Student report cards will be issued to parents according to the scheduled periods on the calendar. Parents are required to come to the scheduled conferences with teachers after the first and third marking period. It is imperative that parents meet all their scheduled appointments/conferences. Progress/conferences. Progress reports will be sent home at the middle of each marking period.

Uniform Requirements

All students are required to wear the required school uniform each day. In case of an emergency, written explanation from parents/guardians must be sent to the school office.

Telephone Privileges

Calls will be made on behalf of the students during the school day, when it is necessary. The student will disclose the purpose for the call and the office personnel will follow through.

Visitors

All visitors must report to the school office and secure a visitor’s pass when they desire to visit anyone in the school.

Parents/guardians may visit the school and classrooms by making appointments. Conferences with the teacher must be arranged before or after school, or if the teacher has a free period. When a special conference is needed, the parents should call the teacher and arrange for a time.
